There is a place I like to go Just another storefront on the same dirty road Nobody recognizes me yet, but they will I know I light one sad cigarette I tell a story with a flash of matches and a deep breath Nobody knows my ending because it hasn't come up yet I put a song on the jukebox, I pick one easy to forget I've learned a trick or two about falling asleep I count the days I've lived instead of sheep I reach such high numbers I feel there must be some mistake When my wife hears me she says, "Oh, hold on" She says, "Oh, for heaven's sake" But I feel it coming up, I feel it coming up behind me Those steady hoof beats, that trusty steed come to bear me away It's too long a journey for me to make on my own two feet I know it's hard to fathom, but one day I'll be gone She says "Oh, please don't talk like that" She says, "Oh, baby just relax" When she asks if I'm serious I say "Oh, heavens no"

Red Shoes 03:04
Your red shoes leave marks everywhere you go and I follow you home, I follow you down the road Around each corner I see your two little red feet disappearing around the bend away from me Everybody knows where you're going now Your red shoes, they give you away--I can anticipate every move that you make, every doorway you pass through But I move like shadows do I keep a safe distance from you Everybody knows where you're going now Your red shoes are like a code we all know

We don't see much of your sort around here The sort of stories that you tell are not the sort we're used to hearing Is it any wonder that nobody seems to listen? We shake our heads, we let out our breath and sigh, "Oh no, it's just him again," but I'm not falling for that dirty old trick again You strike a match against the pyre that we built for ourselves You see us carrying dry branches and you ask couldn't we think to build something else? We answer, "This is what we do, this is what we've always done" You look us in the eye, we look away, ashamed of ourselves, every one, but I'm not falling for that dirty old trick again

Spring is sprung Now we're waiting for the rain to stop so we can go outside again There's coffee for you in the morning and black tea for me Neither of us cares much for sugar or cream The winter was long I got myself in a spot of trouble but you were there waiting for me when I dusted myself off It snowed three times so we stayed inside for days and days watching cancelled shows on DVD We turned the heat on we piled all the blankets on the bed we put our sweaters on but still the cold got in so we told stories of what it's like being warm and it must've worked because we weren't as cold as we were before Darling, I love you I've loved you all this time You know what they say-- if this half is half as good as the last half darling, we've got it made But I know we're at the start of a long road and personally I can't wait to see where it takes us next Darling, I love you I've loved you all this time Spring is sprung Now we're waiting for the rain to stop so we can go outside again

It's a mysterious place you live in, that old house on that old road-- the kind of place I hurry past on my long walk home but I know better than to knock on your door The windows are all painted shut, not a single latch will turn-- maybe it's a century of bad luck or neglect just taking what it's earned The devil's looking in your window, he's got his hands on all the locks-- you know there's nothing you can give up that you haven't already lost

The moon is full, it's oh so full, and we both recall that some poet once compared the full moon to a white balloon caught in the branches of a black tree We're out walking it's well past twelve and the moon seems to be dogging our footsteps, following us home, caught as she is But then something I say sets both of us laughing like mad Something you say sets both of us looking back It goes on and on We go on and on My glass is empty at last and I say something about going home but you just laugh we sit a bit longer we're still and silent The water marks on the window pane get me appreciating the breaks between our sentences, those comfortable silences-- the little gifts that oh, that we make so much of But then something I say sets both of us laughing like mad Something you say sets both of us looking back It goes on and on We go on and on
